Move notation cheat sheet

Hold the cube with white on top and green in front. Each letter names one face.

Faces

  • U — Up face (white, on top)
  • D — Down face (yellow, on the bottom)
  • F — Front face (green, toward you)
  • B — Back face (blue, away from you)
  • L — Left face (orange)
  • R — Right face (red)

Modifiers

  • F — turn the front layer 90° clockwise (looking at that face)
  • F' — the apostrophe (“prime”) means 90° counter-clockwise
  • F2 — the 2 means a 180° turn (direction doesn't matter)
  • f / r / u — lowercase = wide turn (that face plus the middle slice behind it)
  • M, E, Smiddle-slice turns (follows L, D and F directions respectively)

Quick example: R U R' U' — the “sexy move” — turns the right face clockwise, the top clockwise, the right counter-clockwise, then the top counter-clockwise. Repeat it six times and you're back to solved.
